Another lifetime ago (Novemeber) I traveled to West Palm Beach to do the flowers for a wedding reception.
We set up camp in a villa that belonged to a friend of the mother of the bride. The small complex seemed to be built in the 1930s or 40s and was nearly encased in vines and tropical plants and flowers, with a pool and a little path that lead to the Atlantic. I could drink my morning coffee on the balcony. From my bed I could hear the ocean. It was really something special.

Not having spent much time in Florida before, I now understand why people flock there. It's lush, beyond. The vines seemed on the verge of conquering every surface, everywhere. The sun of California but the jungle of Central America. The slowness of the South. It took me by surprise how quickly I was taken with it and even still, I wouldn't mind being back there now.

lovely photos. You make me miss home...rust lilies and those hanging orchids. My grandmother used to have those from her trees in the front yard.

ReplyDeleteFlorida most definitely has its quirks, especially South Florida, but these photos are amazing. It makes me miss it a lot. (I live in North Florida now and although the vegetation is awesome, it's not quite the same). Great photos.

ReplyDeleteI have a handful of family members in Tampa who are so trashy and embody every bad stereotype about Florida that I often forget how lush and beautiful it can be there. I just picture rednecks on their jet skis holding a beer and my great aunt's hot pink 3" fake nails.
ReplyDeleteKate, it's true. I was a little wary having not spent much time there. But the little nooks where we stayed were so nice. Beautiful and fancy and unlike a lot of Florida, I think.

ReplyDeleteThese photographs are so intimately beautiful. I shoot with film all the time and you have inspired me to pick up a disposable camera, something I have not done since high school. Sometimes the simplest and cheapest tool can be better than the nicest medium format beast.
